Our Volunteer Program
Our Forest Preserve District’s volunteer program is designed to engage volunteers who are willing to donate their time, talents, and resources to support staff and programs in carrying out the mission, purpose, and guiding principles. The volunteer program offers opportunities to assist and support staff across many diverse programs.

Volunteer at Mayslake Peabody Estate
Mayslake Peabody Estate's volunteers assist staff by helping lead tours of the Tudor-revival-style building and describe life at the estate in the early 1920s. Research volunteers uncover exciting information about the Potawatomi, Peabody family, and Franciscan Order of Friars Minor. Estate garden volunteers work to re-establish the lush grounds around Mayslake Hall and maintain formal landscaping.
Mayslake Peabody Estate is located at Mayslake Forest Preserve in Oak Brook.
Volunteer Positions
Commitment: Seasonal (April – October, 6 hours/month)
Minimum Age: 18

Distinguishing Features of the Position:
This position involves assisting staff in involves caring for the gardens on site, while providing a safe, informative and enjoyable experience to facility visitors. Duties may vary at the discretion of the District staff. The volunteer will sometimes interact with the public and respond to questions and requests for information. Direction and training is received from staff.
Estate Gardener (PDF)
Commitment: Flexible (6 hours/month)
Minimum Age: 18

Distinguishing Features of the Position:
This position involves assisting staff in researching information related to the site and presenting this information at meetings to be discussed and validated. Duties may vary at the discretion of the District staff. The volunteer may occasionally interact with the public and respond to questions and requests for information. Direction and training is received from staff.
Historical Researcher (PDF)
Commitment: Flexible (6 hours/month)

Distinguishing Features of the Position:
This position involves assisting staff by leading interesting, informative, and accurate tours through the historic portion of Mayslake Peabody Estate and grounds. The volunteer will assist in promoting and presenting cultural or natural resource interpretive/educational programs for the public on site and representing Mayslake at District programs and events. The volunteer will interact with the public and respond to questions and requests for information. Duties may vary at the discretion of the District staff. Direction and training is received from staff.
