Our Volunteer Program
Our Forest Preserve District’s volunteer program is designed to engage volunteers who are willing to donate their time, talents, and resources to support staff and programs in carrying out the mission, purpose, and guiding principles. The volunteer program offers opportunities to assist and support staff across many diverse programs.

Volunteer at Fullersburg Woods
Fullersburg Woods’ volunteers assist staff by helping with nature programs, hands-on learning activities, and seasonal happenings. They also care for animals, tend the gardens, or conduct research.
The nature education center is located at Fullerburg Woods Forest Preserve in Oak Brook.
Volunteer Positions
Commitment: Weekly (2 – 4 hours/week)
Minimum Age: 16 or 10+ with adult

Distinguishing Features of the Position:
This position involves assisting staff in the care, feeding, and safe-keeping of a variety of native wildlife at the Fullersburg Woods Visitor Center, including the bird-feeders. There may be situations and tasks where the volunteer will interact with the public, and respond to questions and requests for information. Duties may vary at the discretion of the District staff. Direction and training is provided by staff.
Animal Care Assistant (PDF)
Commitment: Flexible (4 hours/month)
Minimum Age: 16

Distinguishing Features of the Position:
This position involves assisting staff in caring for the gardens on site. The volunteer will assist in providing a safe, informative and enjoyable experience to facility visitors. Duties may vary at the discretion of the District staff. The volunteer will sometimes interact with the public and respond to questions and requests for information. Direction and training is received from staff.
Gardener (PDF)
Commitment: Flexible (4+ hours/month)
Minimum Age: 16

Distinguishing Features of the Position:
This position involves assisting staff in researching information related to the site and presenting this information at meetings for discussion and validation. Duties may vary at the discretion of the District staff. The volunteer may occasionally interact with the public and respond to questions and requests for information. Direction and training is received from staff.
Historical Researcher (PDF)
Commitment: Flexible (10 hours/month)
Minimum Age: 16

Distinguishing Features of the Position:
This position involves assisting staff in welcoming visitors to Fullersburg Woods Nature Education Center and assisting visitors of all ages as they interact with the exhibits and activities in the center. Duties may vary at the discretion of the District staff. The volunteer is interacting with the public and responding to questions and requests for information. Direction and training is received from staff.
Nature Center Attendant (PDF)
Commitment: Flexible (20 hours/year)
Minimum Age: 16

Distinguishing Features of the Position:
This position involves assisting staff in promoting and presenting cultural or natural resource interpretive/educational programs for the public at Fullersburg Woods and public facilities. The volunteer will frequently interact with the public and respond to questions and requests for information. Duties may vary at the discretion of the District staff. Direction and training is received from staff.
