Someone to Know: Mark Dyer

No two days are alike for Mark Dyer, who serves as community outreach specialist at Mayslake Peabody Estate in Oak Brook. When he’s not helping with the numerous nature and cultural programs at the estate, he can be found fishing at one of the District’s preserves. He finds the early morning to be the best time to drop a line.

What are some of your responsibilities as a community outreach specialist for Mayslake Peabody Estate?

I help build the profile of Mayslake Peabody Estate and engage the public with our site, help guide the future development and restoration of Mayslake, and support all ongoing programs and activities at the estate.

What did you study in college? How do you use that knowledge in your career?
My degree is in industrial technology/graphic arts. I initially worked for printing companies and advertising agencies, and then founded and later sold an advertising and marketing agency. I use the marketing background daily in my current position to promote Mayslake Peabody Estate to the public and business community.

What is your favorite activity to do within the preserves?
By far fishing is my favorite activity. I can be found quite regularly fishing at many of the lakes within the DuPage County forest preserves.

Why do you enjoy working for the Forest Preserve District?
I especially enjoy the variety of work I encounter on the job. We have a pretty small staff at Mayslake and we host an average of 3 – 5 events a day, so everyone pitches in to get things done. I can be working with donors one day, on-site for evening theater performances on another day, or working a wedding reception on a Saturday night. It’s always different.

What inspires you in nature? Why do you like to share that with others?
When I’m fishing — especially in those quite morning hours — it’s great just to be outside and on the water. There is always something to look at and see, whether it’s a muskrat along the shore or wading birds looking for breakfast. The wildlife activity in those early morning hours is just great to experience and share with others.
