Wild Things: Layer Up and Head Outside

District Ranger Dave Sima talks about layering up for winter conditions in DuPage forest preserves on Wild Things

Remember these tips to dress for the outdoors, and fend off frostbite and hypothermia:

  • Wear a base layer to wick away perspiration and moisture.
  • Wear an insulating inner layer to retain heat. (Wool, silk and synthetic fleece retain body heat better than cotton).
  • Wear an outer layer to block the wind and moisture.
  • Stay dry. (Waterproof boots provide a barrier between moisture and your toes, even in mild winter weather.)
  • Wear a hat and gloves or mittens to keep warm and protect your extremities.
