Wild Things: Sign Up Kids Now for Fun Summer Day Camps

Even though you face the harsh winds, snow and ice of winter right now, it’s time to turn your thoughts to the warm breezes of summer and make plans for your kids with our summer day camps.

The District is offering 25 different summer day camps for kids ranging in age from 4 to 12. They usually fill up quickly, so now’s the time to sign your kids up for them. Most of the programs run Monday through Thursday and are 2.5 ‒ 3 hours long.

The summer camps are offered at the District’s five education centers: Danada Equestrian Center in Wheaton, Fullersburg Woods Nature Education Center in Oak Brook, Kline Creek Farm in West Chicago, Mayslake Peabody Estate in Oak Brook and Willowbrook Wildlife Center in Glen Ellyn. Some camps are held at various DuPage forest preserves including Blackwell, Herrick Lake, Hidden Lake and St. James Farm.

Camps for kids ages 4 ‒ 12 are usually topic-based such as insects, animals that fly, and reptiles and amphibians, according to Abby Dean, a naturalist at Fullersburg Woods. For older kids ages 10 ‒ 15, the camps focus more on exploration and adventure and include wayfinding, geocaching, archery, kayaking and tree climbing. New camps include Animals That Fly, Cold-Blooded Critter Camp, Creativity Camp, Archery Camp, Junior Keeper Camp, Kayaking Camp and Wildlife Explorers Camp.

The camps are a great way to introduce kids to the fun of the outdoors. For example, “Little Campers” introduces kids ages 4 ‒ 6 to camping by setting up a tent and familiarizing kids with camping equipment, Dean said.

“Hopefully this serves as a springboard for the further enjoyment of these activities later in life,” Dean said.

Kids also get to spend time with a full-time District staff member who is an expert in their field, “so they are getting a real unique experience,” Dean said.

Most summer camps cost $120 for DuPage County residents and $140 for nonresidents. For more information, visit dupageforest.org/camps.

Dean talks more about the District's summer camp offerings on Wild Things on WDCB Radio (90.9 FM).
