Help Native Birds in Your Own Backyard
Want to help cavity-nesting birds in your own backyard? Cornell Lab of Ornithology’s interactive All About Birdhouses website walks you through the basics, covering features of a good house, construction plans for a variety of bird species and tips on house placement.
The site also shows you how to deter nonnative birds like house sparrows and European starlings from taking up residence in your birdhouse to give native birds a better chance at successfully nesting there. The Migratory Bird Treaty Act makes it illegal to harm or harass any native species, including their nests and eggs.
